Loving small-town life – living and working in Ilmenau

The small town in the Thuringian Forest has an excellent infrastructure, such as an indoor ice rink, a new indoor swimming pool which opened in autumn 2020, an outdoor swimming pool, numerous hiking trails, mountain bike trails and cycle paths in summer and winter hiking trails, sledding hills and cross-country ski trails in winter.

 

Thanks to many local companies, most of which have a technological focus, research and transfer facilities in the IT, glass and metal industries, traditional crafts and service providers, as well as Technische Universität Ilmenau, Ilmenau offers a large number of jobs, many of which can be easily reached on foot or by bicycle. In addition, you can quickly reach the provincial capital Erfurt or Bavaria by public transportation.

 

With the following locational advantages – childcare and education, transport infrastructure and public transportation as well as affordable housing – Ilmenau ranks second among the "most family-friendly cities in Germany", according to a study by Contor, which scrutinised 585 medium-sized cities (20,000 to 75,000 inhabitants) on the basis of 67 locational factors.
